OPI Struts the Runway at Jason Wu & Exclusive Interview with Suzi!

OPI Struts the Runway at Jason Wu during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!

Fashion Designer Jason Wu named OPI the official nail care sponsor for his runway show during the Spring 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. Suzi Weiss-FischmannOPI Co-founder, worked closely with Wu, finding inspiration in Wu’s color scheme and seasonal trends.  The nail look was unveiled at Jason Wu’s runway show on September 9, 2011.

“Jason Wu is an amazingly talented designer, so being able to work with him is very exciting,” says Suzi-Weiss Fischmann. “Nail lacquers are a huge part of fashion. It’s a privilege for OPI to be working amongst world renowned designers during fashion week. I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Jason to accessorize his spring 2012 collection with the hottest nail trends.”

Award-winning designer Jason Wu entered the spotlight in 2009 when Michelle Obama wore one of his designs to the Inaugural Ball. Wu is best known for his polished, ladylike styles that evoke the feel of old Hollywood glamour.  Since he began his line in 2006, Wu continues to display strong pieces that incorporate clean, classic lines within his sophisticated and feminine collections, ranging from daywear to full length gowns.

I was given the honour of being able to ask Suzi a few questions about OPI’s collaboration with Jason Wu and to get a behind-the-scenes look into the color selection process!! Here's my interview:

How did you begin collaborating with Jason Wu? Have you ever worked together before? This was my first time working with Jason Wu, and it was a lovely experience. He came to OPI looking to collaborate on the nail look for his Spring 2012 runway show, and of course we were happy to work with someone so talented and creative.

How did you and Jason Wu decide on the polish that you were going to use in his fashion show? Jason sent me fabric swatches so I could get a better gauge of the colors and textures that would be modeled in his show. Then we discussed a look, which actually changed and evolved multiple times during the two months leading up to NYFW. I think the final pairing (MonSooner or Later on nails, Samoan Sand on toes) was a perfect blend of two major trends – neutral and accent red.

How did you decide on one colour for the entire event, and not to match different colours with various styles and outfits? With the vast amount of OPI’s colours, I can only imagine how hard it would be to narrow it down to only one colour. Having just one color gives a more cohesive look. I personally don’t think you have to match your nails with your clothes, although you can certainly pick a color that’s echoed in your outfit for extra emphasis. When seeing many outfits walking down the runway, it’s very clear that the same color has the power to look different depending on a woman’s style.

What is your favourite nail trend right now? Nail trends seem to be constantly changing and evolving, how does OPI keep on top of the ever changing nail fashions? Nail art continues to be a huge trend for fall; to get instant nail art, I recommend using OPI Shatter for a crackled, two-texture finish. I’m especially loving Silver Shatter and Gold Shatter for a metallic, glittery effect, which is perfect for the holiday season. OPI stays on top of the evolving industry by starting trends, not just following them. Lincoln Park After Dark, a deep purple nail lacquer that remains a bestseller, set off the trend for darker, vampy nails. The frenzy for dark blue nail shades came with Russian Navy, while the word “greige” entered our vocabulary with the launch of You Don’t Know Jacques. Our Research + Development team is constantly working to develop new science and technology, introducing products like Shatter (the first product of its kind) to the market.

I love all of the names that OPI comes up with; they are so clever and unique! How do you decide on the final name? There is a group of six people, including myself, who go behind closed doors for 6-8 hours to brainstorm and decide upon new names for the lacquers. For destination-based collections, which are launched twice a year, the group will play upon unique, interesting, or noteworthy elements from the country or city in question to come up with literally hundreds of names for consideration. Deciding on the final one isn’t always easy, but there are usually some stand out favorites.

OPI has come out with so many different collections this past year, which newly released polish is your personal favourite? Red is now appearing as an accent shade to add a bright pop of richly-pigmented color. I recommend trying this trend with Color to Diner for from OPI’s Touring America collection for Fall/Winter 2011 – it’s one of my new favorites!

One last question, will you ever release another bottle of Mad as a Hatter, say maybe for a fan contest? This is my one longing; I have actually had dreams about acquiring this most desired polish! There are no plans right now to re-release this shade, but  we are always launching new glitters – look for many more coming out for 2012.

Thank you so much to Suzi for taking the time to answer my questions! I hope you enjoyed the questions that I asked :)

  3. Really good interview. Thanks! I am a fan of MonSooner or Later. Also like both of the brights in the Fall Collection - was nice since we only barely are getting fall yet here now - It's still in the 70's everyday and I am sleeping with the bedroom window open in shorts and a T and just the sheet still!
