NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil - Never Say Never

Today I have one of NARS' Velvet Matte Lip Pencils to share with you that was included in the Guy Bourdin Promiscuous Lip Coffret! Never Say Never is a beautiful pink toned purple lipstick. I've recently become obsessed with purple toned lip and cheek products, so this shade was right up my alley!

"Combining the convenience of a pencil with the application of a lipstick in a jumbo-sized crayon design, these pigment-rich sticks provide a matte, creamy finish that will not dry the lips. Enriched with emollients, vitamin E, and silicone, each gorgeous shade glides on and stays put." - Sephora

This Velvet Matte Lip Pencil from NARS is a beautiful purple with pink undertones. The pencil packaging makes this product really easy to apply, and you can do it without a mirror. The major downside to this packaging is that you do need to sharpen the pencils. This means that you'll loose a lot of product every time you sharpen, and at $30 per pencil, that's really annoying! I hope that NARS will decide to redesign their lip pencil line so that they twist up (like Bite's pencils).

The shade Never Say Never is a shade that I would wear year-round. The purple tones down the bright pink, and I absolutely love how it looks on my lips! This Velvet Matte formula is very drying on my lips, and I find that I do have to layer either a clear balm or a lip gloss over top. If you aren't addicted to lip balm like I am, then you might be able to wear this formula on its' own. I was expected this formula to be somewhat hydrating, and I can't imagine how drying NARS' regular Matte Lip Pencil line is! This lip pencil is very long wearing though, and it seems to create a stain on my lips. I find that the colour sticks around for about 6 hours, and it will last throughout light eating and drinking.

Overall, I do like this pencil, but I'm not sure that it's worth the high price tag. I'm glad that I got to try this out as a part of the Guy Bourdin kit, but I do find this formula very drying. I do prefer a more moisturizing lipstick, but the colour of Never Say Never is beautiful! Have you tried any of NARS' Velvet Matte Lip Pencils? Which shade is your favourite? :)

NARS' Velvet Matte Lip Pencils are regularly $30 CAD/0.086oz, but the one that I have is a travel size!

  1. Hmm I like the idea of a matte lip pencil but like you, I'm not sure if it's worth the price - especially considering there are similar products at lower price points. Great review!

  2. this is a pretty colour but i prefer the twists up and a more hydrating formula, so i won't be picking these up. at least it was a deal the way you got it!

    1. This does create a really pretty long-wearing stain, so I like it for that purpose! But I do really wish that it was more hydrating!

    1. Thank you! Unfortunately it wouldn't be a good match for dry lips :(
