NYC Smooch Proof 16HR Lip Stain - Rock On Ruby

I love a good red lip, but it definitely is a harder colour to maintain throughout the day. The idea of a red lip stain sounded great to me, so I was excited to try out NYC's Smooch Proof 16HR Lip Stain in the shade Rock On Ruby* ($4.99/0.1oz). This lip product promises to last up to 16 hours, which is pretty much my whole waking day! Read on to see how I got on with this product...

"NYC New York Color Smooch Proof 16HR Lip Stain stays put, providing a sheer to intense flush of color that sticks around longer than most guys in the City. This is no on-again, off-again relationship. Color stays faithful for up to 16 hours. Looking for happily ever after for a very happy price? Let your lips do the charming!" - NYC

NYC's Smooch Proof 16HR Lip Stains come packaged in a long skinny tube with a marker-like applicator. This was the first time I've used this type of marker applicator, and I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of it. I found that this applicator didn't allow for an even finish, even after I went over my lips a few times. I found that my lips looked a bit patchy and uneven, and I'm not sure whether this was because of the formula or the applicator.

Rock On Ruby is a matte red shade with slightly orange undertones. As promised, this lip product can be applied somewhat sheer, or it can be built up to a richer colour. I really wish that this lip stain applied more evenly, since I do really love the shade. This stain lasts on my lips for about 4 hours before fading - so it unfortunately doesn't live up to its' 16 hour claim, at least not on my lips. I also find this formula very drying, so I do recommend applying a balm or gloss over top to lock in some moisture.

I do appreciate that this lip stain is quite affordable, but this shade and formula just didn't work out for my lips. If you've used this product and enjoyed it, please let me know your tricks for application! My lips are in fairly good condition, and I just couldn't get this red colour to apply evenly. I'm not sure whether or not this problem is specific to the shade Rock On Ruby, or if this formula is consistent throughout all of the shades. Are you a fan of lip stains, or do you prefer lip sticks?

  1. nope, not this shade/product, IT'S THE MARKERS. I have a couple of them and wow I hate them. I should add them to my project pan if I find them haha just to get them out of the house (I have 3, and 2 of them are newerish and come with a clear balm on the other end because, like you said, the formula is super drying). They are from Revlon before they had lip crayons and now that they do I am addicted to the lip crayon and no more lip markers for me... ever. This is a really pretty shade though! But I would stay away from the markers :(

    1. Ok, at least it's not just me then! I've seen Revlon's version, and I've been curious about them, but I'll definitely pass on them now!

    2. I have tried quite a few shades and they are always patchy (I don't have the best lips so they always cling to dry patches), streaky, and stain only in creases if at all while being very drying. I don't blame any particular brand for it honestly, it's the format.
