NARS had a lip pencil set available during the holiday season, and one of the shades included was their Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover. This was one of the shades that I was most excited about from the set, and I'm finally getting around to reviewing it today! NARS' Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils are essentially a lip stick & gloss in pencil packaging.
What it does: This innovative lip pencil coats lips in stunning, glossy color with moisturizing ingredients vitamin E, hyaluronic spheres, and phytosterol esthers." - Sephora
NARS' Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils come packaged in typical sleek matte black NARS packaging. The main downside to these pencils is that you need to sharpen them. I would have much preferred a twist up pencil like most companies do, since that makes it a lot easier to keep in your purse and travel with. Also, you'll lose a bit of product each time you sharpen the pencil.
NARS' New Lover is a beautiful strawberry shade with golden shimmer. I find this shade very easy to wear, and since the colour isn't too vibrant I can pair it with most blushes/eye looks. Since this formula is called "Velvet Gloss", I was expecting a very glossy, hydrating formula. While this formula wasn't drying, I also didn't find it overly hydrating. If you have quite dry lips, you'll probably need to apply a balm or gloss over top. The major selling point of this product is its lasting power. I can wear this shade for about 6 hours before it starts to fade, which I find pretty impressive! The colour also doesn't transfer easily, so you can sip on your coffee all day long.
While I love the colour and staying power of New Lover, I'm not a huge fan of the formula. I was just expecting it to be so much more hydrating and glossy. NARS' Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils are $32 CAD/0.09 oz, which is just too pricey in my opinion. The drugstore has so many great lip pencil options (hello Revlon, Rimmel, Neutrogena), that I just don't think that this is the product to splurge on.
Have you tried any of NARS' Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils? Are you a fan? Do you think that they're worth the splurge, or do you prefer any of the drugstore's offerings?
I haven't tried any of these pencils, since to be honest they're a little bit too pricey for me when there are soo many excellent budget options. The color is beautiful though and I am very curious about them :o) Xx

I agree, the drugstore options are amazing so there's really no need to splurge on these!
Deletei've just never been interested in these because they aren't twist up, and sounds like i might as well stick to my budget ones all the same :) in terms of HE, tarte has tempted me though!
ReplyDeleteI've tried one lip pencil from Tarte and really liked it! :)
DeleteI havent tried this but it sounds amazing, i do prefer matte lip product though. Nars is such a reliable brand!

Thank you! :)
DeleteIf I am honest I prefer cheaper lip products, but that is just because I don't wear them every day I don't see the point for me! These do look lovely, and if I was to splurge, Nars would be wear I head!

There are so many great options available at the drugstore! :)
DeleteI got this in a Blog sale as it came with mini Orgasm and Super Orgasm. Its pretty good, and I love the color. The formula isn't that bad for me, but I would not repurchase any Nars Velvet gloss lip pencils. I'd rather splurge on Tarte Lipsurgence

Oh nice! I agree, I find Tarte's formula a lot more hydrating! :)
DeleteI'm just now getting into these lipstick pencil deals...but honestly, this isn't really doing it for me. It looks pretty on your lips, but your comments on the formula kind of seals it for me -- I'll save my ducats and go buy seven highly pigmented, creamy, moisturizing drugstore alternatives. ;)
ReplyDeleteYa it's pretty, but not worth $32!
DeleteThis looks pretty on you, but i agree that it might not be worth the $$$
ReplyDeleteExactly! :)
DeleteI haven't technically tried NARS lip pencils yet, but I did pick one up at Winners recently. I am definitely excited to try it out, there are some gorgeous colours available. I am a bit sad it's not twist up though.
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it! Winners is a great place to find NARS at better prices :)
