Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow - Vintage Black Gold & Comex Copper

A few weeks ago I shared my thoughts on Stila's Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Metallic Merlot with you, and today I'm back with the shades Comex Copper* and Vintage Black Gold* ($42 CDN each). These shadows are ideal for makeup artists or anyone interested in creating a highly unique look.

"Create a variety of effects with Stila’s revolutionary foil-finish eye shadow that builds from a light, sheer shimmer to a high-metallic opaque. The set includes a deluxe Stay All Day® Liquid Eye Primer, which preps, primes, and creates long-lasting adhesion to lids. It also includes a handy mixing tray for easy use; simply apply, combine and shine." - Sephora

Stila's Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadows come with a tiny primer and a mixing tray. The primer bottle contains very little product, maybe enough for 10 applications. I did receive three of these shadows, and one came with a completely empty bottle of primer, so check your bottles before you purchase! *Note: I have received word from Stila saying that they are aware of this packaging issue, and they are working hard to ensure that no one goes home with an empty primer!* Honestly, the primer is really, really bad, and I wouldn't recommend using it. When I use the primer, the shadow creasing and fades almost instantly. I would recommend using a different primer, such as Too Faced Shadow Insurance. I've also tried wearing the shadows on their own without any primer, and I was left with a sheer was of colour & glitter. The shadow did fade significantly throughout the day. Bottom line: you will need to invest in a separate primer to use along with these shadows.

Vintage Black Gold is a beautiful shade, and I think the name sums it up perfectly. I really do like this shade, but I wish that it gave more of an opaque look. As you can see in the photo above, there are still some bald spots. I need to try layering this over another shadow to see if I can get a more vibrant look.

Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow - Comex Copper

Comex Copper is an orange toned shadow that I think people will either love or hate. Check out The Happy Sloth's review & photos, she makes this shade look beautiful! These shadows have a creamy, almost bouncy formula. This formula is comprised mostly of glitter, and I think it needs to have a bit less glitter and more of a creamy base. I've found it quite hard to get an exact application with this formula, since you do have to apply this formula with your fingers. Glitter tends to get everywhere, especially with the shade Comex Copper. Most of the fall out happens upon application, and I was happy that it didn't continue throughout the day. These shadows do feel a bit heavier on my lids compared to normal shadows, and by the end of a long day they do start to irritate my eyes. I do love that these remove quite easily with any makeup remover.

While I think that Stila was on the right track to making an incredible new product, I do think that there are some definite flaws. The price point will be a major deterrent to the average shopper - $42 is really pricey for a single shadow! I wish that Stila skipped the primer and mixing tray and then sold this at a reduced cost. For the average beauty lover, I think that there are much better products to spend your money on. Stila's regular shadows are amazing, and I highly recommend picking up one of their palettes. If you're a makeup artist or wanting to create some special effects looks, then this might be what you're looking for. I really love the shade Vintage Black Gold, and I'm going to be trying it out over top of other shadows. Have you tried any of Stila's Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadows? Are a fan, or were you left a bit disappointed?

  2. Wow, the metal foil finish looks so pretty! I feel like I'd end up making a huge mess all around me trying to apply these shadows on. Thanks for the review!

  3. I had a lot better luck with the one I used, but it still makes me nervous to see reviews like this and with the price tag I can't see myself buying anymore.

  6. I've heard these are so finicky, and based on the reviews of the CBB-ers working with it, that appears to be true. Such a shame, the sparkles are so pretty...

  7. The gold is so beautiful, it's a shame that it's so tricky to use and with variable results :( Doesn't Stila have a similar glitter eyeliner? Maybe that would work better?

  8. It's too bad the primer is absolute garbage. These look like they have great potential, but they just look so messy.
