MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Smoky Extravagant Waterproof Mascara

Summer is officially here! Yay! I don't wear waterproof mascara year round, but I do like to have a tube on hand during the Summer months. My latest mascara find has been MAKE UP FOR EVER's Aqua Smoky Extravagant Waterproof Mascara* ($28 CAD/7mL). I haven't tried the non-waterproof version of this mascara, but the wand has always really intrigued me!

"Arriving just in time for Summer 2014, MAKE UP FOR EVER introduces Aqua Smoky Extravagant, the waterproof answer to mascara must-have Smoky Extravagant. Delivering volume, length, curl and precision, this mascara boasts all of the same lash-defining properties as the original formula, in addition to withstanding water and heat." - MUFE

MAKE UP FOR EVER's Aqua Smoky Extravagant Waterproof Mascara comes packaged in a fancy glossy black tube with a metallic blue strip around the cap letting you know it's the waterproof formula. The cap is slim and fits nicely into my hands, giving me control over the brush. The wand is really neat, and it is made up of Tynex Fiber, and is comprised of 580 bristles! The brush has a conic shape, which is unlike any mascara brush that I've ever used. The end of the brush is thin and allows you to get every last lash, even the tiny ones at the inner corners of your eyes. The full base of the brush provides good volume and length. Inside the bottle, there's a stopper that ensures that the brush has the exact right amount of product. I do find that this mascara is pretty dry, so maybe the stopper is taking off too much of the mascara.

My lashes have a natural curl to them, and I think that they're a pretty good length. I want my mascara to give me good volume, and to hold my curl throughout the day. This formula contains Panthenol Pro- vitamin B5, which helps to nourish and restructure lashes by protecting them from environmental effects. Pretty cool! I find that this mascara gives me good length, okay volume, but I don't find that it curls my lashes that well. I think that this is a good mascara option for days when I'll be at the beach or by the pool, but I do prefer a more dramatic lash look for daily wear. This formula is 100% waterproof, so you don't need to worry about raccoon eyes while going for a swim, getting caught in the rain, or having a good cry. Don't worry though, this mascara removes really easily at the end of the night with a bit of cleansing water. I remember one time a few years ago I was walking to the mall with some friends during snowmageddon. I don't know if this is a Canadian term or not, but it perfectly describes the types of snow storms that we tend to have. I don't know why we felt compelled to go to the mall, but it was too dangerous to drive, so we set out on our walking journey. Well, about 20 seconds into our journey, my mascara started to run. By the time we got to the mall, my face was covered in black, runny mascara. Not a pretty sight at all! If only my 16 year old self new about the wonders of waterproof mascara!

MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Smoky Extravagant Waterproof Mascara on Lashes

While I wouldn't say that this is the most amazing mascara I've ever used, I do appreciate the waterproof properties. Though, for $28, I was expecting a better curl and dose of volume to my lashes. If you like a dry mascara, then you might really enjoy this new formula, otherwise I'm sure that you could find a cheaper waterproof mascara at the drugstore. MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Smoky Extravagant Waterproof Mascara will be available on Sephora.ca and MAKE UP FOR EVER Boutiques in June 2014, and at Sephora stores across Canada in August 2014.

  1. I recall trying the non-water proof version of this and not really liking the brush design. I think prefer mascara wands with shorter bristles, the longer bristles don't work well for short lashed peeps like me.

  2. I have tried this too and I totally agree that I expected it to be a bit better. I will have to do some more testing. I love seeing different shapes of mascara brushes, they are so fun to use!

  5. Am I the only one that is terrified of this brush shape? I reviewed the non-waterproof one last year and couldn't get past how bulbous it was...
