Travel Diaries: Beijing Day 5 - Sanlitun Village

Tonight I'm back with another installment of my Beijing travel diaries series! Day 5 was a fun day, we went shopping in Sanlitun Village, which has some trendy shops, high end stores, and a ton of stores selling knock-off "China authentic" brands.

Sanlitun Village Shopping

We took the subway to Sanlitun Village, but we got there before the shops had even opened - we still hadn't fully adjusted to the 12 hour time difference! We walked down some streets while we were waiting for the stores to open, and enjoyed the morning air. Once Yashow Clothing Market opened, we headed inside. Dylan had heard that many shop owners believe that they must sell something to their first customer of the day, or else they'll have bad luck for the rest of the day. This means that you can get some pretty good deals if you're a stores first customer! Dylan ended up getting a good price on a Chicago Blackhawks jersey (his favourite team) - China authentic, but with a "Made in Canada" label. Pretty hilarious if you ask me!

Sanlitun Village was a very trendy area in Beijing - we fit right in with our Ray Bans! I was so surprised and happy when I stumbled across a stand alone Benefit store - I've never been in a free standing store! So of course I had to check it out. The store was incredibly cute, and I was hoping that I'd find some exclusive Asian product, but I didn't have any luck with that. All of the products seemed to be the same as what we have here in Canada.

We spent the better part of the day in Sanlitun Village, enjoying the sunshine, beautiful weather, and the trendy shops. At the end of the day, we headed back to our hotel via subway, and went out for a nice meal. We found a fancy restaurant right by out hotel, and decided to give it a try. The menus in China are humongous, there was probably at least 100 options on ever menu we were given! The menus all had English translations and pictures, so we were able to order fairly easily. After dinner, we walked along Wangfujing street, which is always really busy at night. We made a stop at a convenience store to stock up on snacks, and headed back to our hotel. There were only two English channels on TV, but we found a hilarious Chinese game show to watch. We couldn't understand a single thing that was happening, but it was still incredibly entertaining.

Our day in Sanlitun Village was fairly chill, but we had a lot of fun exploring another area of Beijing. I would definitely recommend checking out Sanlitun Village and Yashow Clothing Market if you enjoy shopping! I'm already getting the travel bug again, and it's only been a month since our return!
