To start, you'll need a smoothie base. One of my favourites is a mix of 1/3 cup Almond Milk (I use the vanilla flavour because I like things a bit sweeter), 2 frozen bananas, and 1/2 cup strawberries. You can also add a hint of a sweetener like maple syrup, agave nectar, etc. if you wanted an even sweeter base (I'm not judging!). Blend up the ingredients, adding more almond milk if necessary. Then, pour your smoothie into a bowl, and get started on the toppings. Here's were you can really get creative, and add absolutely anything that you wanted! I normally just add whatever fruit we have on hand and that's ripe. This time I went with sliced bananas, kiwi, shredded coconut, chia seeds, and half of a passion fruit. This was actually my first time trying passion fruit, and I'm hooked! They can be a bit tricky to find in Ottawa, but I picked mine up at Produce Depot on Carling Ave. To eat, simple cut the passion fruit in half, and scoop out the gooey seeds!
I'm also pretty new to the world of chia seeds, but I've been reading up on this little seed, and I'm making a point of adding it into more of my foods. Chia seeds have been shown to help boost energy, stabilize blood sugar, aids digestion and support healthy cholesterol (source), and they really don't taste like much in the smoothie bowl.
Have you ventured into the world of smoothie bowls? I love how you can add on whatever toppings you have on hand, and the end result is always delicious! What combination should I try out next?
